Sciatica is neither a medical condition nor a disease, but rather, it is a symptom of perhaps, an underlying disease.  The common symptoms of sciatica include leg pain that might feel like a bad leg cramp and can be excruciating, and a shooting pain that makes standing or sitting nearly impossible and become worse when you sneeze or cough.  You might also feel numbness, weakness, or a burning or tingling sensation down your leg and even in your toes and some individual may also complain of symptom which might include the inability to bend their knee or move their foot and toes.  In order to diagnose sciatica, a complete medical history including a review of the symptoms and a physical exam of the patient can help the healthcare provider diagnose and determine the causes of sciaticaOne of the tests performs by the healthcare provider that can help pinpoint the affected nerves and determine if there is a problem with one of the patient%u2019s disc is the straight leg raise test. In this test, the patient is instructed to lie on his back with legs straight.  Then each leg will be raised slowly by the healthcare provider and note the elevation at which the pain begins.  Depending on what your health care provider finds, other diagnostic tests might be performed to look for other causes of sciatic pain such as x-ray to look for fractures in the spine.  However, most patients receive treatment for sciatica without the need for further diagnostic testing.
